In his exploration of internal landscapes, or ‘mindscapes’, the artist Thomas Allen finds himself inhabiting liminal spaces where the universal meets the personal and waking life mingles with dream. His imagery occupies an area of overlap between the abstract and the representational, where a tension between form and pattern gives a sense of hallucination. Dramas play out in a hypnagogic realm that feels simultaneously other-worldly and familiar, where ambiguities draw the viewer into a dialogue with the picture.
